My daughters both read the whole book in one sitting, really enjoying the roleplaying aspect of the real-life counterparts playing as their characters. The story is set in high school and talks about issues often found within that setting such as friendships breaking down, bullying and feeling alone or different to everyone else. However, it uses Dungeons & Dragons as a way to build and improve relationships and a way to escape the real world problems that the characters have, with everyone welcome to join the Dungeon Club on their adventures.  The illustrations within this book are amazing and really enhance the story, with Molly Knox Ostertag and Xanthe Bouma making a great team. If your child or young adult seems to have an interest in the game of Dungeo...

This book is a direct sequel, again written by Madeleine Roux and illustrated by Tim Probert, and set in a school for monsters in the world of Faerun. Following the creation of the Danger Club in the first book, the main character Zellidora "Zelli" Stormclash (a human disguised as a minotaur) is now helped by her adventuring party which include a vegetarian owlbear, a mimic, a kobold and a blink dog. With the evil necromancer Lord Carrion, defeated in the first book, locked away in the school, Zelli's nightmares ensure that they meet once again leading to a fight for the survival of not only the school, but all of Faerun. Will the newly formed Danger Club be able to surviv...

πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ”…  9/10 As a fan of the Forgotten Realms book series, when I saw this book (and it's sequel) it piqued my interest straight the way as I thought it might be a good way to test the waters with my daughters as a gateway story, especially after they enjoyed the D&D: Honour Among Thieves movie. I decided to read it first and see how the story, characters and settings were created and if they linked to any of the stories that I know and love. By the end of the first chapter, I was very pleasantly surprised as the reader learns that the story is set in Faerun (with Waterdeep also mentioned) and it also introduces a variety of 'monsters' found in the previously mentioned books and movie. The story itself, written by Madeleine Roux, is set in a school for these monsters as they learn everything that they will need to go out into the wider world, terrorising towns, villages and dungeons across all of Faerun. The main character Zellidora "Zelli" Storm...

A Heart so Fierce and Broken by Brigid Kemmerer (Spoiler-Free)

πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ”…  9/10 My daughters received a signed copy of this book via Toppsta.com along with a copy of the first book in the Cursebreaker series. After reading and thoroughly enjoying the first book,  A Curse So Dark and Lonely , I was really looking forward to reading this book and intrigued as to how Brigid Kemmerer would continue the story. After an initially slow start, mainly due to the introduction of some new characters and the new kingdom of Syhl Shallow, it soon recreates the fantastic storytelling of the first book. The stakes are different and the characters adapt greatly due to various circumstances throughout the book, at times you want to hate some that you previously admired and vice versa. I would definitely recommend this book for children and adult alike.

Warhorse by Michael Morpurgo (Spoiler-Free)

πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ²πŸ”… 9/10 I wasn’t too sure what to expect initially, would a story about a horse during the First World War keep me wanting to read? Definitely! I found it to be fantastically written and surprisingly fast-paced and captivating with many twists and turns throughout. It is an emotional story from the beginning. As to be expected with a war story, there is a great deal of loss along the way with Morpurgo’s writing connecting you instantly to his likeable characters, making some of these losses that much more personal and real. Overall an amazing, thought provoking novel that I would gladly revisit in the future.
